The majority of my students come to me without the hand strength to do many kindergarten activities. They have never had to use their hands to manipulate tools such as scissors. Some have never learned how to hold a pencil without wrapping their whole hand around it. They are required to start writing right away, but their little hands are not ready. During this next school year, I want to begin each day with fine motor skill activities. I want my students to start their day playing and building up their hand muscles in a sneaky way. Writing, drawing, cutting, tying shoes, and even opening milk cartons will all be simpler tasks for my students to master with strong hands!
