As a deeper extension to their learning, I would like to expand my Cesar Chavez mini unit. I would like to include more examples of strong people who stood up for what they believed in and fought for what is right. Specifically, people of Hispanic heritage. The book “Texting with Hispanic Heritage” adds just that but with an updated twist. It delivers the content via text conversations between Alex and the people from history. Alex is a curious child who texts with Frida Kahlo, Cesar Chavez, and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. The book “Who Was Cesar Chavez?” explores his entire life and provides students with a concrete, kid friendly source for building their background knowledge. The addition of these two texts will allow the students to experience culture from a historical fiction perspective, build on their knowledge of firsthand and secondhand accounts, and compare and contrast these experiences with their own experiences. The texts will also support students in further developing their understanding what means to be an activist and why the world continues to have a need for strong activists. Finally, my overarching goal is to always work to foster a love of reading a variety of genres. And, to show my students that they can use reading to relax, unwind, and to learn about the world around them, both past, present and future!
