I believe choice in seating is a huge component of a classroom that invites an intrinsic desire to learn, and flexible seating has more than one advantage. First, if students are able to choose a seat that is comfortable they are likely to focus their effort on their work. Just as adults work best when we are comfortable, so do children. Second, any choices that they have throughout the day will increase personal responsibility or ownership of their education. Third, some of the seats I have in my classroom allow students to move while they sit which may help with posture and concentration. These are just a few of the benefits I have seen while using flexible seating in my classroom. In order to utilize many of the flexible seating options in our classroom, my students need tables instead of the desks that are currently in my classroom. By adding the large, round tables and a book shelf to my classroom, my students will have more choice in choosing the best learning space for themselves. Whether it be reading, math, science, or centers, students will be able to choose the best place for them in our environment. My students will be able to bounce on a ball, rock in a seat, or sit in a regular chair if that's what they choose. Being at a table will also build a sense of community in our classroom. Research tells us that comfort plays an important role in learning. When the lights, temperature, and furnishings aren't comfortable, the learner is susceptible to distractions. Self-selected seating can be an empowering way for students to increase self-awareness about themselves as a learner. Thank you for considering our project and helping my students become independent, empowered, learners.
