Evolving technology has allowed Speech-Language Pathologists the ability to help give students a voice and practice their skills. Using a tablet, students are able to engage with words, and communicate their wants, needs, and thoughts when they are unable to do so themselves.
My students would benefit from an iPad to access various apps to help with their articulation, receptive and expressive language skills, and basic communication. An iPad is an amazing way to target a variety of speech and language skills. For example, apps on the iPad can be used to teach and reinforce articulation by allowing students to practice their target sounds as well as utilizing "Video Self Modeling" using the camera. Students are able to record themselves and listen back. Students will also be able to practice receptive and expressive language through apps and online websites such as BOOM Cards, which is an interactive flashcard website.
Another benefit to having an iPad for speech-language therapy is for my students who require incentives and reinforcement. The iPad can serve as a motivating break for a job well done. Lastly, I will be able to bring speech-language therapy to students in the classroom, but also in the hallway or playground without having to bring bulky materials around with me. This will allow me to better serve my students anywhere!
