Times are definitely changing and having been teaching young children for over 20 years, I have experienced this shift. More and more students are being diagnosed with ADHD and other types of behaviors that make it more difficult for them to focus and learn. No longer are the days where classrooms are silent and children are required to sit as silent as soldiers! I want anyone walking by my classroom to hear their learning and know first hand that they are engaged! Research has shown that flexible seating encourages students to find the best spot for them to stay calm, focused, and productive. A teacher once said, "There is no better way to show your support for a student-centered classroom than creating a classroom from a child's point of view!" These flexible seating options in my classroom will allow them to choose where they want to sit and be more engaged.
