Did you know that one out of five students is dyslexic? I have been an elementary teacher since 1999 and just learned this a few months ago. Struggling readers have always had a special place in my heart, especially now that I have a student in my class who is dyslexic. I have never felt so helpless as a teacher as I do right now because I have never been trained to teach students with dyslexia or any other learning disability. Watching my student struggle to read and learn to spell has really changed my outlook for students with learning disabilities. I know that in order to reach as many struggling students as possible, I need training in a multi-sensory program. Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory approach to reading and spelling. It reaches every learner by activating touch, sight, and sound to achieve success with phonics. More than anything, I want to see my students become successful readers. I can't do this without your help.
