This project is important to my class and my teaching because it allows for students to be able to read different stories in our units. I think it is important to find materials that students can be excited about and be interested in reading. I wanted to find books that appeal to their lives while also being able to bring in some character building in the units. I chose The Book Thief because it is an interesting story that teaches tolerance that can go hand in hand with the ever popular Diary of Anne Frank. I also chose Hidden Figures to help with Black History Month. I think it is important for my students to read about low-income and underprivileged women and see how they can succeed even in times of trouble. I think these books can give them hope.
