The most important indicator of success in a student's academic career is how many words they read. As a second-year teacher, in a low-income community, much of my class library is made up of old, second-hand books. I need books that will pull a student in, making them itch to open it. These kinds of books will create excitement about reading that will carry them through their whole life. These books will not just stay on a shelf in the classroom. As distance learning continues, these books will be sent home with students to help them enrich their at-home learning. These books will fill students' homes with words. When students are given books that interest them, they will begin to see reading as an exciting and enjoyable. This will change their lives.
