Students derive greater meaning from and connection with materials that validate and illustrate the diversity of their identities and experiences. When supporting the social-emotional development of our students, we want to ensure the books and resources we use are reflective of the diversity within our student body. These books represent strength, perseverance, and self-acceptance through a lens of inclusion and equity. Our students will have an opportunity to read (or be read) stories that reflect their backgrounds and experiences, as help them learn about others as well. While one collection of books can't fully represent the vast richness of our students’ lives, we want to make a conscious effort to make our resources as inclusive as possible! This project will ensure that our social-emotional library is full of books celebrating the diversity of experience and culture, black history, and leadership. Students from multiple classrooms will have access to these books every day. We will use them with small groups targeting social-emotional skill-building, as well as during whole-class lessons focusing on inclusion and character development. We hope for these books to reflect human diversity in the broadest sense, addressing race and ethnicity, religion, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, and other special circumstances.
