COVID-19 has brought many challenges to us all, and the impact on our students has been unique. I strive to offer a place of refuge for them amidst uncertainty and instability However, in order to keep our students as safe as possible, new procedures have altered the school environment and teaching methods. Water fountains have been turned off. Sharing of supplies is prohibited. Students cannot share books unless they've sat for 24 hours between students. As we approach our first reading unit, my normal plan to conduct book clubs cannot happen since the limited quantity of titles prevents the sharing of books across class periods. In our classrooms, we participate in Google Classroom activities weekly to keep their tech skills fresh, but the types of activities we complete are limited due to the lack of enough headphones for every single student. Due to financial burdens or language barriers, many of my students do not have items available to them that most people don't even think about not having: their own book to read, a refillable water bottle, or a pair of corded earbuds to assist with their learning. The majority of my students come from low-income homes or homes of migrant workers where home communication can be extremely difficult. In order to brighten their lives, give them items they can call their own, and remove burdens from their minds that no child should have to carry, I hope to do the following things: provide students their own book to keep and cherish after use, their own refillable water bottle to provide them with a constant resource to remove the worry of how they can get something to drink, and their own pair of earbuds compatible with school and home computers that would keep them safe and enhance their learning.
