My student's safety in the classroom is my top priority as a special educator, however I also want to create a fun and engaging environment for them to learn in. In my instructional math setting, differentiating the environment to best meet my student's needs helps my students to meet their goals. Each student has unique learning needs that can benefit from student choice and advocacy in the classroom, including flexible seating. For my middle school students, rocking in chairs is a constant safety concern that also causes off-task behavior. With the requested flexible seating, my students will be able to choose the seat that best fits their individual learning style and needs, while also remaining engaged in the lesson and on-task. In addition to traditional flexible seating such as wobble cushions and bean bag chairs, I would like to implement bounce bands for students who do like traditional desks. The overall goal of this project is to not only increase my student's safety and engagement in the classroom but to promote free choice and independence.
