Most adults have trouble sitting in a hard plastic chair eight hours a day, yet we expect six and seven year old children to do it five days a week. We owe our children comfort in their learning environment. As adults, we make ourselves comfortable we when we work and when we play. Our students deserve the same. Research supports that when children's individual needs are met in the academic world their success rate maximizes. Our dropout rates decrease and their self worth increases as early as the beginning years. Often, just because they felt that someone took time to understand them and care for them. If that means that I can provide them a cushion to work on the floor instead of mandate they sit in a hard desk, I want to be that teacher. Often, the child forced to stay in the seat is the one who never gets the work done. This is not because he or she can't learn, but because he or she can't focus when confined to a small rigid space.
