Our school is one of the most diverse in the city. We have students that come from all different races, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. I want our classroom library to be full of books that have characters that are as diverse as my students. Books can be a mirror to see yourself represented, and also a window to see into cultures different from our own. By filling our classroom library with books from all different cultures and about characters from different parts of the world, my students will not only be able to see themselves in our books, but will also get a chance to learn about people from backgrounds other than their own. Reading about an issue often builds empathy and readies a child for a larger discussion in a safe space. I believe that having a diverse classroom library is an important first step in opening the door for difficult but necessary conversations about the history and current state of racism in our society.
