Our community needs a glow up, so we can grow up! A large majority of my students have a shortage of fresh produce in their daily lives. Most of them are on our subsidies food program at school and childhood obesity is apparent in a lot of my classrooms. As the art teacher in my school, I find it a huge responsibility of mine to bring beauty and community value into my students atmosphere. So, I have found a solution to both my felt responsibility and to my students' health food crisis. With my materials, I plan on creating a beautiful mosaic community garden. First, my students will learn the value of urban gardening by watching an amazing documentary about America’s health food crisis called “Plant this Movie”. Afterwards, we will discuss Ron Finley and his street art of “guerrilla gardening” in South Central L.A. Our artwork will then be to create garden boxes out of cement blocks with gorgeous tile mosaics. We will start our mosaics in the classroom by gluing the tiles to a fiberglass mesh and then will transfer them to the outside of the blocks with thin-set and grout. The students will be working collaboratively on each side of the planter box, creating an image that fulfills the idea of “A Hopeful Future”. Students will be simultaneously learning how to garden from seeds, recyclable containers, and heat lamps with their life Science teacher. They will need to figure out what seeds can be planted together and the requirements for those plants to grow fruitfully. In the end, our Panther Pride will be healthier and stronger as a community with this project. We hope you will be able to join our mission to help our planet and our school.
