Students long to "rock out" and play along with their favorite songs on the radio! The Ukulele is one way to accomplish this goal. Our students learn to the play the recorder in the 4th grade, but the Ukulele takes things to an entirely different level--it can even be used in a limited fashion with our younger students. Imagine walking into a 3rd/4th/5th grade classroom and seeing kids sitting in groups of two jamming along with their favorite song on the radio! I am hoping to acquire half of a class set of Ukuleles so that my students can be split into teams of 2 to collaborate and help each other learn to play. I love using teams because the kids get a chance to be both student and teacher/coach. When one is playing the other is coaching them and helping them along. We will begin by teaching some basic strum patterns using rhythmic concepts we will learn in class and then begin to learn some chords together. Once we have some basic chords in our repertoire, we will transfer it to some well known songs and then to playing along with some fun YouTube videos! I am hoping we get good enough to use them in our grade level performances! I can't wait to teach them the ukulele!
