The ability to read for pleasure is something that I encourage for each one of my students. I want them to be able to read outside of my classroom, and hopefully, build a love for reading. By having students check out their own copy of The Hobbit, students will be able to take the book out of the classroom and jump into the adventure wherever they are. For some students, reading on their own is difficult because they are not able to follow along or read in their heads as quickly as other students. I wish to drop that barrier and be able to let students read at their own pace, and the easiest way to accomplish that is by having each student have their own book throughout the course of the unit.
