Being a teacher in a self-contained classroom, my most important job is teaching these students how to be independent. Independence is EVERYTHING. The color coding materials will allow students to do more things on their own because everything will have its place and they will be able to recognize that. When something goes awry, my students need to be able to problem solve and do more things without the help of someone else. (Lifeskills) You will find in most self-contained classrooms, that various students have various sensory needs. My classroom is no different. In order to learn, my students see, feel, touch, and hear to organize their understanding of the world. We are a hands-on class, every day. These donations will give us the ability to work on life skills activities such as measuring for cooking, fine motor activities like buttoning and zipping their own clothing. Sensory input so that a student with autism, can learn to self-soothe and to appropriately regulate their emotions. All of these things are crucial in getting these children to be as independent as possible so that they can be functioning members of society. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, but you will also help promote student achievement inside and outside of the classroom.
