My students are currently in a full distance learning model. One of the many challenges they face is access to books. Many of the stories provided by our district adopted curriculum do not include characters with backgrounds or experiences that our students can relate to. I want my students to feel connected to the literature we read and be able to see themselves in the text. Especially at a time like they are experiencing now where they are aching for connectedness and to feel seen and heard. I am hoping that by doing a novel study with this story, "Becoming Naomi Leon," students can become more engaged in their distance learning and learn to love storytelling.
