The materials I am requesting for my project will be given to economically disadvantaged students in my junior high drawing classes. Many families cannot afford to purchase quality art supplies or art supplies at all for their children. They simply are not a priority. By providing these students with their own sketchbook and set of Prismacolor pencils, we can change their world! In the past, I have noticed that these students feel embarrassed when sitting with their peers who have all the materials they need to be successful at producing high-quality sketches for artworks. But, when given their own art supplies, these students can focus on expressing their creative ideas, not their feelings of shame. They obtain a sense of pride in themselves and a sense of belonging at their school. It's truly amazing to think that simple art materials can be so powerful!
