Social and emotional learning is a key factor in the education of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. Students aren't meant to only learn through paper and pencil. There are numerous ways students can learn and as a teacher it is my job to teach in a variety of ways. Students become engaged in their learning when they're having fun. My 6-8th graders love to play games and will benefit from playing games that will boost their skills and help move them towards their goals. As a newer social skills teacher, I want to be able to provide my students with different ways that they can practice important skills without feeling embarrassed to practice them in front of their peers. The resources that I am asking for are going to be used along with the school provided curriculum during whole group instruction as well as on the spot teaching or classroom breaks. The goal setting thumball is going to be used in a month long section about how to make strong goals and how to reach them. The CBT Skills and Mindfulness book as well as the Anger Management Workbook will be used in more 1:1 settings to help students effectively work through their feelings. Finally, the rainbow pop fidget tools will be used in the classroom when they are in need of a sensory item to either calm themselves down or keep themselves on track. These, along with the rest of the items on my list, will not only help me become a better social skills teacher, but will help develop stronger social skills in my students.
