Students need to understand the experiences of people from different times and races from them, and I believe stories they choose to read is a great way to do this. We have 10-30 minutes of this quiet time each day, during which I conduct individual reading conferences with them. My students will take turns sitting in these floor chairs and using the pillows during independent reading time. They may also use the couch in my classroom. I am building my classroom library, but I need a better selection of nonfiction books written by and about minorities. My hope is that when students are in a comfortable environment well-stocked with books just for them, the joy of reading that they experienced in younger grades will be restored.
