In my classroom, there is not one chair/desk combination that is not in some sort of disrepair. The chairs are cracked, the desk parts are chipped and splintered, and the legs tilt/wobble from the metal frames being bent. They are too small for so many 8th graders that are the size of adults. Some years, I don't have enough desks for all of my students unless someone is absent. This project will allow my students to sit safely and comfortably, with enough space to have their laptop and their book out at the same time! My students will be able to conference easily and more naturally at a table made for such activities, and have desks that can be easily put into groups with everyone having access to get in and out of their seat (not possible with the connected chairs/desks). Investing in things for my classroom that are for my students will show them that they matter, that everything about their experience during the part of the school day that involves my class matters. I can afford to pick up small things that make my classroom nice and homey, but I can't afford new furniture for 35 students. The old, dilapidated classroom furniture is not good enough for them, not on any day, let alone every day.
