A structured, multi sensory reading program that includes a listening center is essential in helping our students to develop effective life-long reading habits. Students in Kindergarten-2nd grade classrooms, including English Language Learners and students with special needs, will benefit from listening to a variety of texts. Students will be grouped according to their skill levels and provided with the text to follow along as they listen to the story being read. Students who have decoding or processing difficulties can pause and replay the recordings as often as necessary to enhance understanding. The listening center will also allow the flexibility to meet the varying needs within the classroom. It will be used to reteach specific lessons or concepts by having the students listen to audio recordings made by the teacher. The audio recordings will be differentiated for individuals or groups of students. Including a listening center in the literacy program will enrich our students’ learning experiences.
