Having my students read diverse books and graphic novels will develop empathy by helping students relate to people who are different from them. I have seen struggling readers pick up a graphic novel that deals with a social issue and not want to put it down. They want to do research on their own on the topic or find more books relating to the true stories. Images are powerful. The art in graphic novels makes it easier for readers to relate to the characters and imagine how it would feel to be in a similar situation, which builds empathy and social awareness.
