The items that I am requesting are a much needed commodity in my classroom. I have a Bachelor's and Master's degree in History, so I have many books ranging over many topics of history; however, these books are far too advanced for my class population. I am requesting reading materials that are subject specific for my class. With my students gaining an interest in History as a subject, I would love the ability to provide course-specific readings for my students. I was gifted book shelves from our library that they had to do away with for a remodeling. Sadly, these beautiful bookshelves are in my room ready for materials but sit barren against my wall. When my students excel and complete all activities and other assignments requested of them that day, I like to provide them the opportunity to free read a book that is related to this class. Currently, I only have about 8 books that my students can read. These are easy-read books that I found at a second-hand book store when I was first hired. My goal is to fill these shelves with books related to U.S. History to 1877 subject books so that my students will have many choices and always have something to read. This will allow this to further stimulate their minds and read about topics that have piqued their interest during class time.
