Positive reinforcement is a proven strategy to encourage the best performance from students. Each year we have an awards day ceremony to reward students whose academic performance sets them apart. Because our school is in such a high poverty area, we do not have much money to spend on extra items. We need to have certificates and medals to give students to reward them for outstanding academic performance. Our students have so many obstacles to overcome due to poverty and family situations. Students that rise above the problems and inequity that can hinder so many deserve to be recognized for their effort and intelligence.
