My classroom library needs to be a place where my students can see themselves in books. The covers should draw them in because the characters look like them. The story lines should match the struggles and successes that they experience in their own lives. The books should help my students understand that not everyone is the same! The shelves should be filled with books that reflect the various levels of readers in my 5th grade classroom. With these new books, my students can dive into stories that they can relate to and learn from. They need to see students who look like them, have similar problems, or common dreams. They need to feel a connection to the characters who become their friends. I have been a teacher for 19 years and my classroom library shows it. My shelves are filled with books for a different generation, books written before my students were born, books full of characters that my students cannot relate to. My library needs a facelift!
