The historical fiction novel "Lay That Trumpet in My Hands" is a necessary novel in our historical fiction genre. Like "To Kill a Mockingbird," which our students will read in 9th grade, this amazing book about social injustice will allow my students to answer many of their questions about today's society. For example, in the book, good people appear to be punished or socially excluded for standing up for what is right, when others around them who perpetrate or who are indifferent are not. This parallels many of the current themes our student witness in the news and online on a daily basis. Furthermore, this book will allow my students to gain a historical context about our countries past struggles and how we have evolved and continue to grow.
