Pinch-pots, coil-pots, misshapen or haphazard looking animals, hands printed into slabs of clay... these are some of the beloved art projects that line mantels and bookshelves in the homes of proud parents. As children get older, they bring home projects such as these, but more advanced, that illustrate their growth in technical skill. The use of ceramics is commonplace in most art programs, as it should be. Using a variety of mediums is important for students to be able to explore and express themselves effectively. This is my second year at our middle school. In the past, the students did not get to work with clay as part of their art program because our school did not have a kiln. Having been an art teacher for 8 years, I know how much students LOVE working and creating with clay. So last year, I decided to incorporate ceramics into the program and I packed up 220 art pieces and drove them over to the elementary school to fire their pieces in their old, but working kiln. My students and I are so excited that this year we received a donation in the form of a brand-new kiln! The kiln, however, did not come with items such as kiln shelves, kiln stands, or kiln wash, which would allow us to fire many projects at the same time.
