Finding something that can capture the attention of 23 individual fourth graders is a huge challenge with a very small amount of possible solutions that can be used inside a classroom. Fortunately, I have been able to find a solution through the Percy Jackson book series. From the very start, every student was drawn in and never wanted to stop reading. They would beg to continue reading. I have used this passion of reading to create a classroom community. We have learned about the Greek gods and goddesses. They look forward to “Mythological Mondays” and learning about the new god, goddess, or hero. I have even created a classroom competition with the students which assigns them to a Greek god or goddess and they earn rewards for positive behavior, keeping their area clean, and completing their homework. I have even been lucky enough to have the administration volunteer to help with the competition and take time out of their schedule to read with the students. We have completed reading the first book of the series. We are about to begin the second book. If we were fortunate enough to have a set of the third books, it would mean a lot to my children and help us end the school year with something we all love.
