Our students have the opportunity to work with our media center and complete the “Read Woke” Challenge. This is an initiative that was created by Gwinnett County Media Specialist Cicely Lewis. What is Read Woke? It’s a feeling. A form of education. A call to action, and our right as lifelong learners. It means arming yourself with knowledge to better protect your rights. Learning about others so you treat people with respect and dignity, no matter their religion, race, creed, or color. A Woke Book must: • Challenge a social norm • Give voice to the voiceless • Provide information about a group that has been disenfranchised • Seek to challenge the status quo • Have a protagonist from an underrepresented or oppressed group This challenge runs through the end of April for our students. Your donation to this project will help us purchase books for students who help us complete this challenge. I want to express that Read Woke is completely funded through donations/grants, as is of zero cost to the students. We simply want to celebrate them for reading.
