Hands-on lab activities are when the deepest and most generalizing learning happens in a science class. Lab activities are also when students learn to work with a partner or small team to support each other's learning. My 7th-grade life science students have previous experience dissecting roundworms but were hindered by the old materials we had to work with (e.g. dull scalpels). Even though their initial dissecting experience was not 'perfect' due to limitations in supplies and equipment, I was impressed by how collaborative and engaged my students were. Their maturity, attention, and behavior inspire me to provide them with a more robust experience. As my students build knowledge about the interacting subsystems within organisms, the fetal pig dissection lab will provide students the opportunity for actual 3-D exploration of these subsystems. I chose fetal pigs because the size of the organs make them easy to find and fetal pigs have internal anatomy similar to humans. Working in pairs or small groups students will dissect fetal pigs to identify the organs and learn how they fit and work together. The new dissecting kits and covered dissecting pans will allow them to work methodically. Your support will give my students a premier hands-on lab experience! Thank you!
