Students repeatedly cite furniture and seating as an essential piece of what makes them feel comfortable and ready to learn at school, and yet, the majority of classrooms still rely on uncomfortable tables and desks. As adults, we know that we are more attentive and productive when we're comfortable physically, and when we feel emotionally at ease, so why wouldn't our students want the same? For many students, school is a safer place than home, and we can help students who are suffering from trauma by making the classroom as comfortable and welcoming as possible. Seating is an essential part of creating a welcoming classroom. Students are visibly excited to come into a room when flexible seating like beanbag chairs, couches, or office chairs are available. Encouraging positive attitudes is one piece of developing a healthy classroom culture, and offering flexible seating is an easy way to show students that we care about their comfort. When students feel safe and welcome, they are ready to learn and can be their best selves.
