In Kindergarten, most of our classroom library are simple decodable books that do not have rich stories, characters, or representation. I place a great emphasis on reading for joy and reading about topics we love. It is very difficult for students to find books that sustain their attention or cultivate a love of reading. It is difficult for my students to imagine themselves in the stories or to "make a movie in their mind" using the limited plot of these short, decodable books. With this new library, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to see themselves reflected in the literature, to learn about cultures different from their own, and to develop a true love for reading.
