Each one of my students is very different from his/her peer, which is something to be celebrated. As all of my students are diagnosed with Autism, they differ from a wide range of abilities, including their interest and experience with literacy. Teaching emergent reading skills is a crucial part in early childhood development, which is why books are such an important aspect of the preschool setting. Since my students are delayed in the typical preschool curriculum, books that are being read in the general preschool environment are not developmentally appropriate. My students learn best from books that are created individually for them, in order to allow them to be engaged and participate in the reading lesson. With these individualized books, students will be able to feel successful reading and participating in a way that feels comfortable and sets them up for success in the classroom. I will use the materials provided to create and print books related to our classroom themes and preschool curriculum that can be adapted individually for my children. These books will include information that is presented in a way that is developmentally appropriate for my students’ level. The adapted books will also give opportunity for students to be interactive with the material. Research shows that it is so important for our young learners to be hands-on when learning information, as they are more likely to retain that information. Setting up success in the classroom environment allows students to feel more confident and enjoy school, which is something they will carry with them many years beyond preschool!
