Within the structure of primary and secondary education, reading a good book from start to finish is becoming an experience that is only read about in the history books. Students are increasingly pushed toward articles, excerpts, and short stories to fulfill the requirements imposed by the drive to meet and exceed standards. This drought of complex and extended texts keeps students from accessing the technology that raised civilization from the times of fire and sticks toward the era of industrialization and eventually modern technology. Students will be given access to a variety of texts, some of which we currently possess and others we hope to purchase, and they will choose one to read thoroughly and prepare notes on in order to share their insights into the story, characters, and theme with a small group. The literature circle format, i.e. book clubs, gives students access to full-length texts, provides time for in-depth analysis, and a chance to be in charge of their own academic discussions. With the purchase of these additional books, we will be offer a wider range of reading materials and run these literature circles on more than one occasion during the school year. Please help us bring books back into the classroom in a meaningful manner.
