These high-quality texts have been selected through my thorough research. The read-alouds on this list will be used to teach students a variety of extremely important kindergarten skills, including emotional regulation, identifying feelings, and practicing self-control. One of my favorite books to read at the beginning of the year is "My Mouth is a Volcano!" After borrowing it from a colleague, I realized just how beneficial this text is at helping students practice their self-control and not let their mouth "erupt" with the first thing that pops into their head. "The Way I Feel" is another classroom favorite. In this text, the students learn about identifying the feelings they have and use words to express those emotions. Rather than the usual "happy", "sad", "scared" (although important) this book goes on to explain more complex feelings, such as pride, disappointment, fear, confusion, etc.
