My students struggle to understand what they are reading. I am a native American Sign Language (ASL) user. I help my students to make connections to the book by using ASL to create a bridge to the text in the book. I bring background information and then the book becomes meaningful to my students. The ones that already have experiences in life will make these connections. Books have allowed several of my students to heal from their experiences in life. My students begin to see that reading can be fun. They are able to think about the issues being addressed in the book and how they would behave in that situation.
