In these uncertain, alarming, and confusing times, it is important for teachers to adapt to meet the needs of their students. The combination of our current pandemic, violent racial injustice in our nation, and increasing isolation needs to be addressed in our return to school, whether it be remotely, face-to-face, or in a blending of the two. The items you will find on my list will help provide what I feel are the 3 essential needs of children in this current era. #1. SAFETY: Our students and teachers need to feel safe and be able to participate in the classroom community effectively. You will find this need represented on my list in the form of PPE such as masks, cleaning products, colored tape (for creating safe spaces for students to stand/walk), and social distancing markers which will help to keep my students safe. #2. REPRESENTATION: Our students deserve to be represented in the literature they read. Now, more than ever, difficult conversations need to be had between children and adults about the racial climate and injustices happening in America. It is my belief that these conversations can happen through meaningful reading. When students see a reflection of themselves in the material they read in school, they will feel more powerful and understood. You will find a list of inclusive and diverse books on my list for students to read either remotely or face to face. #3. CREATIVITY & FUN: In these times of anxiety and uncertainty, we cannot forget the purpose of our practice. Children need ways to have fun, laugh, and learn in creative ways! The markers, colored pencils, and other creative tools can be used in face-to-face learning at school or allocated to students' homes for remote learning.
