Too many of our students come from literacy deserts. Their homes have few to no books available to them to read. Over my past twelve years of teaching, I have been building a classroom library to give all of our student access to grade-, age-, and interest-appropriate books. I have been lucky to receive a few local grants to fund the purchase of books. I have also received many book donations and spent hundreds of dollars buying new books. My students and I will continue to grow our classroom library; however, we also need a better way to display and organize books so that students can more easily find books that are appropriate and appealing to them. Students are more likely to read when they have easy access to relevant, interesting books. These bookshelves will prove to students that our community values reading and that they deserve access to high-quality books on high-quality shelving.
