With the vocabulary kits, our goal is to help our students learn core vocabulary words in a fun, engaging, multi-sensory way. Core words are a small set of simple words that make up 80% of words used in everyday communication (e.g., like, not, want, go, I, etc.). Starting with a core word such as “go” they can first learn to make a car or a wind-up toy “go”. This motivating activity can be expanded in a variety of ways and can be used to teach multiple core words (e.g., “go fast”, “we go”, “I want to go”). These vocabulary kits will help us work with our students to expand their vocabulary and expand their communication across their environments. We are enabling these students to talk with teachers, parents, peers, and the wider community. While the speech therapist cannot stay with a child for the entire week, a vocabulary kit can. Our role as speech therapists is not only to teach our students, but also to educate their staff on ways to create language rich environments and model alternative forms of language (gestures, pictures, iPads). We will use our vocabulary kits to first model language use with fun, novel toys, and then to promote generalization by leaving activities in the classroom that can be used all week. Thus, we will be teaching language in a functional way that meets both the needs and interests of our students.
