Such a large number of students are diagnosed with attention disorders. Most often, what I see in these students is a need for movement! We ask them to come to school and focus for approximately seven hours each day all while sitting and being still. WHAT?! That's a long time to stay quiet, stay engaged, and not move your body! (Yes, they get physical education. And, yes, they move between classes. But for some students, sitting still for just one class period can be a chore.) Why not wobble while you work? If a student can fill the need for movement and not disturb others, it's a win win situation for a teacher! Gaining academic success is more likely while wobbling in your seat compared to getting up and moving around the classroom (not working AND disturbing others). These wobble chairs not only look like a fun choice of seating in my comfy class, but they help to solve movement issues, too! I have a feeling once wobble chairs are in my "cottage", I will have to create a rotation chart of who gets to use one and when. They are sure to be a hit! And those students who truly need them most won't even realize it's a tool for their special need.
