I am one of those teachers. My inner-city class is a high-traffic space. I get seniors navigating the transition to graduation and the real world. I get those tough students whose scary demeanor melts away once they realize that I treat them with respect and even risk sticking out my neck for them. They all come to my class despite it resembling a broom closet. I teach in New Haven. We are a sanctuary city and a TITLE I school. We have high transience rate coupled with high poverty. We get government money, yet it never trickles down enough to actually benefit the students. In my 18' x 20' class jammed with 27 desks and piles of teaching material, I feel as though I am not able to offer my students a calm and inspiration place where they can feel motivated to tackle school-and more importantly-impending adulthood. Help me to create a safe and comfortable classroom space to benefit these wonderful young minds.
