These books will help my students to make authentic connections to the world around them. My students are able to enter worlds and places they are unable to otherwise; they are able to see the world through other perspectives. They learn complex vocabulary, sentence structure, and learn inferencing, all of these are essential to all of our futures. Most importantly, students learn empathy through reading. Every student should be able to read books where they find windows, mirrors, or perhaps even a sliding door. They need books of great variety, whether it be race, gender, interest level, reading level, or genre. They need to be exposed to books they can identify with to help find and define their own voices. They need books where they can find a window to see into a new world, find a mirror of a reflection of themselves, or if they are lucky enough, a sliding door that welcomes them into understanding themselves and the world around them. My students enjoy reading, they just need more opportunities to find great books that could give them the gift of a window, a mirror, or a sliding door.
