I would like to introduce agriculture to my students who have never experienced it firsthand. To do this, I would like to add hydroponics systems to my classroom. Adding this to my classroom would make it possible to give students hands-on experience throughout the course as we discuss human impacts on the environment and ways to look at the science behind solving the associated problems.
My courses cover solutions to human impacts on the environment throughout the year. These systems would make it possible for students to test water quality, observe the different types of food plants that can be grown in a hydroponic system, as well as help them to understand the need for additional methods to provide food to a growing human population. Besides getting hands-on experience with producing their own food, we could refer back to the processes involved in this project throughout the year to scaffold the information that they are learning and trying to apply to their own lives.
