Most of my students love to read, as it gives them an escape from stressful situations or a chance to calm when they are upset or frustrated. The mystery novels let them become someone else for a time. Some of my younger ones, the ones not yet proficient in their reading skills, enjoy when I read to them so they too can escape. I like reading to my students; it strengthens that teacher-student bond so that they feel like my advice has more value. They love the titles such as Fly Guy and Nate the Great. The historical fiction books such as Who was King Tut? and What was the Underground Railroad? allow my younger students to research topics while still understanding what is being said.
