This last year, we went through several packs of pencils and index cards. The students use the cards when preparing for speeches or when prepping for research papers. I still believe that one learns more when writing it down. My students take information from reliable resources and write facts and info on their notecards. This is the first part of the research process. They can then use these cards to organize their paper. My students were also given a composition notebook to keep track of learning and personal growth. They used these on a daily basis to complete bell work and to journal about experiences in the classroom. They kept these in the classroom where they became a valuable tool to record homework, journal about open-ended questions, and relate to themselves. I rarely asked them to share their work as I respected their privacy and openness in their journals.
