My plan is to start an after school Mariachi club and eventually start a permanent program in our district. I genuinely believe the study of mariachi should be available to all students and that it encourages a musical community. I think that mariachi is unique compared to other traditional ensembles because the skills learned in a mariachi band can be implemented outside of school to gig and play at events much more easily than with marching band, orchestra, or choir. In order to make this happen, my plan is to begin by teaching soprano ukulele in the second semester of 4th grade into 5th grade to teach foundational string instrument skills. The students will learn to play pop songs and mariachi music on their ukuleles and use their ukuleles to accompany their peers while they sing or play the recorder. I believe that learning to play a string instrument like the ukulele is essential. Adults who choose to continue to play an instrument after graduation often play the guitar or another like instrument. Learning foundational skills on a ukulele will allow the children to transition to a like instrument as adults with ease. Adults who can express themselves healthfully through music and support their community by playing at church or other local events are happier and healthier people.
