Our sixth graders have recently received an infusion of diverse titles into their reading classes. We've noticed independent reading increasing. Because students had some choice in what they read, their ability to discuss the literature increased, and their writing revealed a deep understanding of plot, conflict, character development, and theme. Fullfilling this request will go a long way into diversifying our text choices in the upper grades. We plan to incorporate these texts into a literature circle model in the seventh and eighth grades, so the students who participated in lit circles this year can continue to do so, and thereby continue to improve their skill and increase their enjoyment of reading.
