For this project I have focused on the students I work with who struggle with phonemic and phonological awareness. These concepts are the stepping stones students need in order to become strong, confident readers. My students love that feeling of success when they are able to "tap out" the sounds of words. This is why these decodable readers are so important to have in any elementary classroom. These books give the students the opportunity to use their newly acquired knowledge of tapping out sounds and turn that into the ability to read an entire book! The looks of accomplishment on their faces are priceless and I hope to share that with all who donate. This project also includes manipulatives and activities for students to allow the them to visualize the concept of reading sounds. Manipulatives provide a way for students to learn concepts in a developmentally appropriate, hands-on, experiential way! This increases not only their desire to learn more, but theie retention of the skills taught.
